It's not so much that Alex Smith is bad, from what I'm reading that Martz said in that column, it's moreso that he thinks he has 3 capable guys competing for the QB spot. Plus, remember, in STL--first, Trent Green was Martz's guy, then the knee injury came, and then Kurt Warner stepped in and we all said "who?"...but that worked out pretty good for him. Then, when Kurt Warner started getting injured and old--Marc Bulger stepped in, and less of us said "who?" again, but we were all still pretty skeptical I'd say since he was a lowly rated QB out of West Virginia--but he knew Martz's system. Now, he's a Pro Bowl QB.

I hate Martz, but his stance was pretty clear--if a guy knows his system and runs it well, that will be the guy he'll go with.

I dare say I've watched/listened to a lot more 49ers football in the past few years than most on this board, and he doesn't suck. He's been injury riddled, and he was young coming into the league--he graduated early from Utah, and is just 24 years old. That's a little too early to say he's washed up or can't do the job. Martz is also his 4th offensive coordinator in 4 years in the league--I'd like to see any QB face those circumstances and try to win on a team like San Fran who's main focus has been rebuilding a roster decimated by the salary cap, and still trying to recover.

If Rich Gannon can be an NFL QB (Super Bowl quality even), so can Alex Smith.

I expect him to get a few years w/Martz under his belt and flourish if/when they get some more weapons around him on the outside. If things in SF don't work out and he goes elsewhere and sits behind a better QB for a while, you could see him in his early-mid 30's making an impact w/a team once the guy ahead gets injured and/or retires...ala Gannon.

but come on bro......he was the # 1 overall pick

how many first overall picks have been in a discussion with a guy who went to UC-Davis and has been with 8 teams in 6 years??

it isnt as though they brought in some other teams top qb or even a quality backup to compete for the job

this is a guy who has bounced from practice squad to practice squad and to NFL europe

that would be like the giants bringing in brock berlin and saying he has a shot at cletus spot

it just doesnt make sense

when that happens it tells me that said qb stinks

smith was a system qb at utah.......which makes me happy because im hoping tim teafag follows the same path
